Coca-Cola Border ad
The advert first starts of in an extreme long shot; the enviroment has dull colours and it looks deserted. The characters seen in the first shot are two men marching the oppisite way. Serious deep music starts creating an intense atmosphere.
Next is long shot, showing their uniforms which gives a clue on who they are. The one man on the left is seen more clearly and he's wearing royal solider type clothing; he's wearing a long black hat, a belt and has a sword, his clothes are decorated with gold tassels, his clothing makes him look important. He is marching very precisley at medium-ish speed showing he is concentrated and dedicated to what he is doing.
This gives the clue that they may be soliders.
Now the advert has a close up shot, the solider in this shot looks unpleased at the other solider. His clothing is smiliar to the other solider's except a different colour theme and has metal- kind decorations; this gives a clue that the are on oppisite sides.
The shot changes to the other solider (Close up) and he aswell looks unpleased at the other solider; this now lets the audience know that they definitely disapprove of each other. His face is shiny giving a clue that the enviroment there in is hot.
Solider (1) throws a piece of scrap paper on the ground; this is seen in a worm's eye view so you just see their legs. They are wearing boots and the sword on them is seen clearly; this definately makes them look more like a solider.
A short medium close up shot of them stopping and quickly looking down at the paper.
Short cut in shot, the paper crosses a line; seen as the border line, to the other soilder 's (2) side.
Solider (2) has an angry face as seen in close up shot. He is angry because the paper is on his side, so in the next shot, which is cut in, he stabs the paper with his sword and in a cat's eye view he carelessly chucks it on the other side. This makes him look tough and dangerous because if he would just stab a piece of paper and be angry at it, imagine a person crossing the border line...It would be worse.
After that, the shot is now Medium long shot, solider (1) is looking at solider (2), solider (2)aggressively puts his sword away and tucks at his jacket; giving a dirty look at solider (1).
Extreme long shot again, except from a giant's view. Still same envrioment and still both solider's walking the oppisite way because it's clear now that they both hate each other; so they wouldn't walk the same way like friends would.
Soilder (2) in extreme close up shot, a noise of the opening of a bottle gets his attention.Serious music stops there. Soilder (1) enjoys drinking the product seen by his face and he's drinking it quickly because its cooling him down. Now the audience knows its a Coca cola advert.
Close up shot of soilder (2), a sympathetic music starts, soilder (2) looks and wonders what is he drinking? I want some too? Soilder (1) admires the product in a close up shot, music gets more sympathetic, he quickly looks at solider (2). Soilder (2) gives a puppy dog look at soilder (1) in a medium shot, the whole tough look has disappeared.
Medium shot again, soilder (1) is looking at soilder (2), cut in shot appears, he grabs the product in an ice filled bucket. He kindly wants to gives it to soilder (2); strange to see both walk towards each other to share something (long shot).
In medium shot, soilder (1) is seen akwardly trying to pass the product without passing the border line. Long shot, soilder (2) looks left and right to see if anyone's there. Close up shot, soilder (2) agrees to give him the drink by looking at it.
Cut in shot, soilder (2) reaching out to hold the product but can't due to border line.
Soilder (1) cleverly finds a way to give the drink to soilder (2) by re-drawing the border line so soilder (2) can take it without getting into trouble.
Both drink it happily, sharing a moment together proberbly for the first time. Suddenly they realise there out of role and quickly get back into role and keeps that moment a secret.
www excellent and detailed work Hana. Well done. You have used some media terminology and made clear connotations.
ReplyDeleteebi you could now develop the skill of summarising the advert and exploring how the meaning is created and how it shows the brand in a positive way.
