Factors in a film
Camera work - makes film interesting to watch
Good Plot - grabs audience attention, emotionally engages the audience, original new story, use imagination and don't get bored easily
Good leading cast - gains audience if features popular actress/actor. - know acting will be high standard compared to actor starting off.
If film gives you something to think off - gain a response or perspective, stimulation. With Iris, many perspectives - Iris who has the cancer, Jen who is suffering for her friend. Audience learn there is hope and change is good.
Good soundtrack - music that connects with the actions. Gives off the moods, attracts the attention.
Never too late - goes well with Iris because it is 'never too late' to change and believe for the best. Jen wants to be there for her friend but she can not.
Without you - both friends are always together, without each other they are not complete. When they are separated this is an impact on their lives.

What do u think of my film idea?
Kool! I love how it's so relavent and real. I would watch it.
People normally watch drama films by themselves. Perhaps this is because most drama films contain serious and important messages that's not entertaining to watch with friends but by yourself. Usually those type of drama films are mature however if the drama film is a comedy or action then it will be watched by a bigger audience since it is more enjoyable to watch with company.
Cinema is popular to go with friends. Drama films in cinema might not be as successful compared to the other films in the cinema because it is not as enjoyable to watch with company however young adult females are likely to watch drama film with friends in the cinema.
All females from the survey likes Drama films. This may be because Dramas tend to be more emotional and stereotypical females like that. Unlike males, they do not like Drama films as much, I know this because the males do not remember the last time they watched a Drama film or they were forced to watch a Drama film - shows the lack of interest. But males do like watching drama films that contains violence and action.
Everyone in the survey are working class and from working class familes, maybe if I asked other demographics the answers would of been different. If so, it can be said your opinion is created by your own lifestyle.
What everyone likes about Drama films is that it's realistic and relatible. The messages from the film keeps the audience thinking and teaches them a lesson about life. The plot is engaging and original. Everyone thought Iris would be a good drama film because it meets all the key concepts.

Iris - Todorov narrative theory
Todorov narrative theory
Equilibrium - Sad, desolate environment of 2 young girls - Jen and Iris. Hang with a group of young thugs, although the bond between the two is strongest in the group.
Disruption - Girls at party, Iris does not feel well at party. When girls return home Iris faints. Goes hospital and finds out she has cancer. Jen finds out
Complication - Iris in hospital going through the worst time in her life and left Jen to fend for herself for the first time. Jen is emotionally and mentally effected by this - now is alone. But eventually she decides to change because she knows Iris is suffering and will be a different person at the end therefore she wants to change for her. So if Iris comes back, Jen wants her to live a better life with her so she starts now.
Climax - Jen changes for Iris, she leaves group, changes style, attends school, learns from mistakes. She knows Iris may or may not die but she's doing this for the both of them. Doctor says Iris is getting much better. Jen thinks she will live.
Restoration - Iris doesn't survive in the end. Sad, desolate environment is seen again except with just Jen alone but she's a different person. However she hasn't got her best friend and knows sheis doesn't survive in the end.

BBFC
Certification from British Board of film classification - Determines minimum age allowed to watch film - decision made by the content in the film. Connotes what will be in film and can appeal to target audience then.
In Iris, it will be a 15. I checked on the BBFC website and what's included in a 15 is what's in my film.
15 - Frequent strong language, drug taking, Strong violence, portrayals of sexual activity, strong verbal references to sex, discriminatory language or behaviour. Iris includes scenes which are not suitable for children under 15 - drugs and in the film strong language.
But an 18 certificate would have to be viewed by someone 18 and over. This is because the content is unsuitable for anyone under that age, e.g. strong horror, this can disrupt and upset a person under 18, like a child - they be scared from the content. Although 18 and over are okay with it therefore the film is an 18.
PG-13 — Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Children Under 13. A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them.

- Drugs can be seen however can not be promoted or encouraged. There are scenes with minor drug usage and alcohol abuse.
- And the storyline contains sad scenes that might upset young viewers. Also the storyline is personal because it has real life struggles. Therefore the film should be viewed by a mature audience. Lastly Iris contains messages that can apply to 15 years and over - the film is about struggling with loved ones being diagnosed with cancer.

The trailer is PG 13 but the film rating is 15.
The tone coming from the trailer and the way it makes the audience feel can change the classification. For Iris it’s an unsettling tone which could disturb the audience therefore the film is 15. However the trailer is 13PG because the tone of it is not as disturbing. The trailer does feature drugs, any drug use will have to be PG13. Also there is alcohol abuse and depressing scenes which could influence a young audience making it unsuitable for children. And finally, the storyline is personal and it is a mature theme so it may upset a viewer. The trailer follows the 13PG rules.

Up to parents to allow child under 13 can watch it.
Film Marketing
Film marketing promotes the film thorough
advertising, to maximise the amount of people to watch the film. Film studios will invest to market the film; the marketing budget sometimes cost more than the production budget because the marketing makes people come to watch the film, the more people on the opening weekend the more successful the film is. Films with different genres and target audiences will be advertised differently. Like blogging, merchandising and viral videos.
Social media for example is major to use when advertising a film, this connotes the film may be targeted at teenagers since most teenagers use social
media. Mainly 16-25 years use Facebook and Twitter, Iris should be advertised a lot on them because the target audience are more likely to see it.
Ages on social media - http://marketingland.com/study-social-network-growth-across-the-globe-driven-by-mobile-users-older-generations-41982
Iris trailer is a huge part of the marketing campaign because it is delivering the idea of the film to the target audience and that makes them want to watch the film.
Most blockbuster movies already have an audience. The studio knows the film will have a big audience so they give a huge budget for the movie. Examples are films that are made as a second movie, the same audience that watched the first will be there. Or a source like a book made into a film e.g Twilight, fans of the book will watch the film.
Original movies like INCEPTION and AVATAR are the exception to the rule, and represent a huge risk for the studio backing them.
Sometimes, studios will give a lot of money but no profit in return. This is a waste of money, so studios need to make sure films will make a good profit.
Films make millions and if a film is successful, they have a profit. My Sister's Keeper made $12 million on their opening weekend. People will be aware of the money made and will talk about the film's money made to people, letting the film to be known to more people. Advertises the movie - 'Water Cooler moment'
In the My Sister's Keeper poster, it has the main characters on it acting natural. Also at the top there is 'From the director of…' the film the director filmed before can gain the same audience for this film. The star names are on the top left, the actresses can attract fans to watch the film. It says it is based on the best selling novel in small text, since it is a best selling novel then people should recognise it so it does not matter the text is small. The readers of the novel will watch the film.

Representations
Both Iris and Jen feel rejected from their families like most young teenagers.
Like most teenagers, Iris and Jen feel that their bond of friendship is much stronger and closer than that of the the ones with their families. This is because during the teenage years, secondary socialisation occurs and adolescents move away from the family and form small, close contact groups. Friends become family. Therefore, it will target a teenage audience because teenagers can understand and relate to the concept of close, personal relationships with friends.
An event that occurs in the trailer is when Iris is diagnosed with cancer. Cancer is an illness that many people can relate too, it has been said that we all know of at least one person who has been affected by Cancer. This event is also designed to cause an emotional reaction with the audience and "tug at their heart strings". This event is also designed to create sympathy for the main character (Iris) and even when Iris and Jen are parted their bond is still strong.
The hill in the trailer is a significant place as it was where the the two main characters (Iris and Jen) first met. A hill is a place where children roll down so it denotes fun, laughter and joy. It is also metaphor for the ups and downs of their relationship; the ups being the fun, happy times and the downs being the drugs, bad crowds and ultimately, the cancer.
Iris and Jen are both from working class families. Iris is Caucasian and Jen is mixed race. Children from working class families are more likely to follow bad pathways because their lifestyle (environment - hard and unforgiving) leads them to it. They don't get what they want, so they will misbehave.
There are less opportunities for the working classes and the main characters are a stereotypical media representation of the working classes - they are stuck in a rut and do not believe that their lives can be any better than their parents lives. They do not attend school, and subsequently end up socialising with gangs and criminals and like many teenagers with little hope, they partake in criminal activities, like drug taking and car jacking.
